Wynona’s House Hosts 3rd Annual Conference on Child Maltreatment, “Coordinating a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Response to Child Maltreatment”

NEWARK, New Jersey, October 6, 2017 — On Thursday, November 2, Wynona’s House Child Advocacy Center will host the 3rd Annual Conference on Child Maltreatment. This year’s
conference is titled, “Coordinating a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) Response to Child Maltreatment.” The goal of the conference is to raise awareness about child maltreatment and to educate the professionals who respond to child victims of abuse and neglect on the innovative best practices utilized by victim service providers. This conference is intended for Victim Assistance Professionals, including child advocates, educators, CASA workers, law guardians, child protection workers, law enforcement professionals, medical professionals, mental health professionals, and social workers.

The day-long conference will include workshops with a variety of speakers. Topics include how to use a collaborative model to assess and treat Youth with Problematic Sexual Behavior (YSB) problems, protocol for pediatricians and treatment for child sexual abuse victims, the intersection of pre-teen curiosity and online predators, sexting and cyber-bullying, protocol for reporting child abuse according to mandatory reporting laws, restorative practices for service providers assisting children and families of abuse, and the vulnerabilities of individuals in victim populations that put them at risk for further victimization.

The conference will also explore some more controversial topics, including Safe Infant Sleep: Reducing the Risk of SIDS and Other Sleep-related Infant Deaths and a discussion of Painless Painting: Corporal Punishment through a cultural lens.

A panel discussion of the Multi-Disciplinary Team Response will host speakers from the Essex County Prosecutors Office, the Division of Child Protection and Permanency, Metro Regional Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and Wynona’s House Child Advocacy Center.

“We want the betterment of children, and we are looking to address some of the new trends we have seen in our center,” says Wynona’s House CEO, Dominic Prophete, J.D. “By raising awareness not just of child abuse and child neglect, but of the effectiveness of the multi-disciplinary team response in treating children who have been victims, we increase the likelihood for them to become successful and resilient adults by providing a coordinated treatment through child advocacy centers.”

Wynona’s House is offering a limited number of discounts to students and non-profits. Students may use STUDENTS185 to receive $35 off registration. Non-profits may use NONPROFITS185 to receive $15 off registration. These discounts are available on first-come, first-served basis.

The mission of Wynona’s House is to promote justice and healing of child victims of abuse and violence by coordinating investigative, prosecutorial, treatment and prevention services. Wynona’s House is unique in its multi-disciplinary approach to treating children who have been victims of abuse or neglect. The multi-disciplinary team consists of social workers, law enforcement officials, medical and mental health providers, and family advocates. MDT Team provides guidance and support by conducting monthly case conferences, case reviews and informal conversations to support service delivery and one another as professionals. This heightened communication improves outcomes for our families and, most importantly, the child, who is the focus of the treatment.
